Malaysia: 750m2 EduFarm opened in Kuala Lumpur city mall

August 23, 2023 | Vertical Farm Daily

A 750m2 indoor farm with educational purposes has been opened in the heart of Wangsa Maju, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, and is completely accessible to the public.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with AEON in bringing the Agroz EduFarm-in-City into the shopping and retail experience of AEON shoppers while at the same time creating awareness and experiential learning for parents, children, students, and the general public about how clean, healthy, and fresh vegetables are grown,” says Gerard Lim, founder and CEO of Agroz Group. Agroz Group is a supplier of large-scale commercial CEA facilities that are driving food safety, food security, and sustainability.

Gerard adds,” The most unique thing about this EduFarm is located just 15 minutes from the busy city centre of Kuala Lumpur. We wish to reach parents, children, students and the general public from within the local community and city dwellers to experience and learn how vegetable farming is possible right in the heart of the city utilizing technology.”

The vegetables grown in Agroz’s farm range from salad leaves such as lettuces, kale, arugula, and wild rocket to local varieties such as nai pak and siew pak choy. The cultivated products will be supplied at AEON Alpha Angle, as well as eight other AEON supermarkets across the Klang Valley. The Agroz EduFarm-in-City is considered ‘Malaysia’s largest vertical farm inside a shopping mall as Gerard points out.

Open to the public
The EduFarm will open for weekend tours from September 2023 to showcase how its technology produces quality, clean, and pesticide-free vegetables. The EduFarm has its own experience center and activity room to demonstrate to children and families, especially how vegetable farming is possible right in the heart of the city.

“At Agroz AgTech, we’re really contributing to sustainability by reducing or preventing waste and conserving resources through the use of solar and renewable energy. On top of that, we’re trying to combine it with a myriad of digital technologies, including Internet-of-Things (IoT), data analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, automation, robotics, cloud, edge computing, blockchain, and 5G communications,” Gerard adds.
